Welp, might as well start 2020 with a rant. Let’s start with some background:
In August of 2014, P.T. (short for “Playable Teaser”) appeared on the PlayStation store. First announced at Gamescon, P.T. was marketed as a demo for a mystery horror game by a new studio named 7780s Studio.
I played through the demo myself and holy. fucking. shit. It was not only the best demo I’d ever played, but it was also one of the best horror video games I’d ever experienced.
It was scary in the perfect way. Unlike many horror movies and games nowadays, P.T. didn’t lean heavily on jump scares. Instead, it takes a slow-burn approach.
In the beginning, its simple stuff like a radio turning on with a news report of how a father murdered his family in the house or the chandelier shaking violently when you leave and reenter the room.
Then, the game goes batshit crazy. Refrigerators hang from the ceiling leaking blood, a deformed baby fetus is found in the sink, a ghost is seen watching you at the end of the hallway; it’s fucking nuts.
It’s so fucking nuts that there were times I almost quit a few times and the demo is only about 40 minutes long!
Everything builds on itself until the climax, where you finally exit the house to reveal that you’ve been playing as none other than Norman Reedus himself and P.T. is the demo for the new Silent Hill game, Silent Hills.
Add to it that you’ve got Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid developer) and Guillermo del Toro (director of Hellboy, Blade, and many other films) leading the charge? Just fucking take my money already!
But alas, the game was never released. Kojima and his staff left Konami due to creative differences, and in April of 2015, the game was officially canceled. Konami also pulled P.T. off the Playstation store, making every console that had installed extremely valuable.
And over the years I eventually forgave Konami for robbing me of what would be the best horror game of all time. That is, until this morning when I saw this on Twitter:
When the director of a horror game is too scared to play his own product, you know it’s that fucking good.
And if I’m the head of Konami, there’s no fucking way I’d let that game get canceled. Hell, I’d suck Kojima’s dick myself to make sure he doesn’t leave. Think of the money you stupid fuck!
But nope, their egos got the best of them and we’ll never know what they had in store for us with Silent Hills.
Fuck you all.
