It’s finally gonna happen. Blizzard has decided to take control back from the most boring team comp of all time: the GOATs comp. Originating in late 2017, the comp relies on a triple tank-triple healer combo, where all players basically dive the enemy team player by player, and the overwhelming damage and healing output allows them to steamroll through any other comp outside another GOATs team. It has become the staple comp for any team in the Overwatch League, and it is so damn boring to watch. I mean seriously, there’s no creativity in the OWL due to it, and even members of the pro teams are sick of it. So what was Blizzard’s reaction? Fuck it, let’s make everyone play 2-2-2 from OWL to bronze drooling morons. That’s right, starting in the next week or so, Overwatch is getting role lock: forcing every team to play with 2 DPS, 2 Tanks, and 2 Healers. Rumor has it you will select your role prior to searching for a match, then get paired into a 2-2-2 comp.
If you’ve been playing OW for enough time, you remember the days when 2-2-2 was the standard. It still is the standard outside of Master+. There’s some people hating on this change as it limits role flexibility, but I think the positives greatly outweigh the negatives. Instead of being flexible in all 3 categories, players only need to be flexible in their roles. Tanks should be able to play main and off; same with healers. DPS needs to be able to swap easily between dive, hit scan, and tank busters. This will greatly help the game. Also, think about how many times you solo queue and end up with a 4 DPS, 1 Tank, and 1 Healer group. If the other team is running any sort of good comp, you’re fucked. You have like a 20% chance of winning those matches at any level unless you’re a god Widowmaker or something. Now, you don’t have to worry about that. And finally, the Overwatch League will actually be fun to watch again! The 2-2-2 metas are so diverse right now in the qualifying leagues: bunker, hack-fist, clockwork, etc. Now we get to see more diversity from team to team. I might actually tune in now.
This update should be happening within the next 2 weeks, so dive back in this week to prepare!
